Smallest Image Sensor For AR/VR Headset

OG0TB from Omnivision is the world’s smallest image sensor launched for the face and eye tracking application. This sensor can enable designers to develop more compact and power-efficient devices for use in AR/VR/MR and Metaverse applications.

The ‘ready-to-go’ image sensor features a three-layer BSI global shutter (GS) and comes in a compact package measuring just 1.64mm x 1.64mm and features a 2.2µm pixel in a 1/14.46-inch optical format (OF). The sensor consumes less than 7.2mW at 30 frames per second (fps). For connectivity, the OG0TB supports flexible interfaces, including MIPI with multi-drop, CPHY, SPI, etc. The OmniVision sensor is suitable for designing compact, lightweight, battery-efficient devices such as smart glasses.

The market for AR/VR headsets is on the rise across the globe. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), in 2021, the demand for AR/VR headsets grew by 92.1% year over year, with shipments reaching over 11 million units. Until now power consumption has been a bottleneck in the adoption of this technology. The OG0TB is an ultra-low power sensor that consumes less than 7.2mW at 30 frames per second. The low power consumption of this sensor can prove to be a major turning point in accelerating the adoption of this technology.

The company claims that the OG0TB GS image sensor features the company’s most advanced technology such as PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology, Nyxel technology, etc. All these technologies make it one of the most advanced camera sensors which allows it to take a sharper and more accurate image of both still and moving objects, furthermore, the sensor is able to achieve a resolution of 400×400 pixel with a small sensor size. The sensor also supports a flexible interface, including MIPI with multi-drop, CPHY, SPI, etc.

“OmniVision has developed the world’s first three-layer stacked global shutter pixel technology and is implementing it in the smallest GS image sensor with uncompromising performance,” said David Shin, staff product marketing manager – IoT/Emerging at Omnivision. “We pack all of these features and functions into a ‘ready-to-go’ image sensor, which provides design flexibility to put the camera in the best place on some of the smallest and slimmest wearable devices.”
